Fashion and Textiles final piece

After researching various fashion designers, we began creating our final pieces for the project. I created two as I had some time left after finishing my first piece, images ar shown below.

Overall, I think they worked well. The shapes and colours fit in with the original swatch we were given to work from and I think the overall shapes and styles I created worked well both 2-D on a wall and 3-D when worn on the body.

Light Photography

Over the weekend I visited Ilkeston Fair. I took some photographs on the night and also it reminded me of some experimental work I had done at the fair a couple of years back. Here are the images from the weekend and also some from my experimental stuff back in 2012.

Vivienne Westwood

Vivienne Westwood is an English fashion designer. She was largely responsible for bringing modern punk and new wave fashions into the mainstream.

Above are an example of some of the punk style clothing Westwood has created. She was deeply interested in the Punk fashion phenomenon of the 70's. which can be seen in these designs. Being into punk fashion, I really like these pieces. I think the colours are bold and make a statement. I especially like the first image, the dress looks mainly plain and simple in design but the splash of bold colour to it really sets the piece off. I also like the style of the dress, especially the neckline. It kind of reminds me of paper folded to create the style.

The shapes in the centre and right pieces really stand out along with the bold colouring of the garment on the right. I especially like the shapes used in the centre image and the layers Westwood has incorporated into the piece. Similarly with the right piece, I like how the layers have been pieced on the left of the dress, like belt style attachments to the side of the dress just to add a finishing touch, I think that really sets the piece off and makes it stand out.

This piece I'm not too keen on as to me it looks too plain. However I like the ruffle style in the piece and especially like the belt type fastenings on the legs to the shoes as I think this stands out from the outfit.

Above are more catwalk pieces by Westwood. I picked these as they are mainly very bold pieces and are quite eye catching in terms of the colours and shapes used in the pieces. I like the bold colouring used in the top central piece and also I like the ruffled styling in the second lot of pieces as I think they work. Even though they are just one colour and are quite simple pieces the shapes created within the pieces make them stand out.

This piece is very bright and the colours contrast nicely throughout the piece. I especially like how the colours used are present throughout the whole of the piece and not just one section as i think this makes the piece successful. I also like the strap detailing across the chest of the piece.

Lady Gonzalez

Lady Gonzalez (Celia Arias) is a London based visual artist. She started out as an apprentice at The costume House. She launched Lady Gonzalez in 2013, highlighting her signature digital print textile manipulation and then applying it to various fashion items.

I love how imagery has been used in these necklaces to create these bold pieces. Also the colour in the pievces makes them really stand out as bold accessories, which is what Arias was intending.

Again with this piece, I like the bold style of it, made to stand out from others. I especially like the eye design stitched onto the hat as i think it adds a great humorous side to the the piece. The styling of the piece as well stands out to me as there is a lot of use of bright and bold colours as well as the lines and shapes involved in the piece. Overall, giving it a patchwork style when incorporated with the 3-D effect eyes sewn on.

I like the style of this piece as it is using unusual materials to make the piece. Shells have been used on sections of this piece which i think makes it look unusual and quirky, I also like the colours used in this piece as they make the piece stand out but the colours work well together.

Lucy Orta

Lucy Orta is an English contemporary artist living and working between both London and Paris. Her pieces very often have meaning to them, as well as being strikingly unusual and bold.
Her more sculptural work looks at the boundaries between the body and architecture and explores the common social factors between them, like communication and identity.

Social Fabric.
I like this piece as it shows people all linked together and 'social' as the title suggests. I also like how she has incorporated lettering into her piece using the word 'link' on the actual links that have been made. I also think it is quite symbolic that she has used only black and white in the making of this piece and not gone for brighter and bold colours throughout as I think this was the piece has a stronger meaning.

This piece entitled 'Refuge Wear' represents the issues of mobility and survival. I think it looks a little like something you may design for the arctic or something similar, maybe this is the impression of survival?

This piece suggests the blend of position and need people wear on their sleeves.
I like the style of the piece, as with many of Lucy's pieces they have meaning beyond just the visual element of the piece and this appeals to me.

These bolder pieces stood out to me as they are extremely eye catching pieces. I liked the bold contrasting colours and the design and shapes used in each of the pieces, all of which makes these pieces successful.

Alexander McQueen

Alexander McQueen was a British fashion designer. He founded his own label. He earned four British Designer of the year awards as well as am International Designer of the year award in 2003.

Mcqueen's work is mainly quite visually striking, not necessarily with the bold use of colours, but from the shapes and style of his pieces.

I think this piece is arguably one of my favourite pieces of his. I love the style and shape of the dress and the ruffle design on the top half. I also love how McQueen has carried on the colour theme throughout the dress and into the skirt design at the bottom.

There are many pieces of McQueen's that i find visually interesting, like the above pieces. I like the originality of the styles of the pieces and especially like the headpieces he has created for the outfits as I think sometimes these set off the whole piece with their unusually shapes and styles, such as the second piece where the headpiece shape fits in nicely with the train of the dress.

His work has been seen worn by many celebrities. Probably most noted, Lady GaGa who incorporated McQueen's pieces in her music videos and live shows. Here she is wearing one of McQueen's pieces at an acoustic show shortly after McQueen's death, where she honoured the man.
This dress is striking in the pattern and colours used to create the piece, possibly why it was listed among the '100 Best Dresses of the Decade' by InStyle magazine.

Although many of McQueen's pieces are unusually styles and bold, some of his pieces are more styled for wear, like these dresses above, which wouldn't be out of place at a wedding or prom.
